Katie’s Custard in Waco, Texas is just under two hours from Austin, where the entire BK crew was busy shooting the pilot episode of Bite This. As Bitchin’ Kitchen’s longtime managing editor and senior community manager it’s my duty with the new series to bring you the hot scoop on all things bitchin’ and report on food from around America. So you can imagine my disappointment when we realized we didn’t have enough time to drive out to get these tasty custard treats. I wouldn’t even have to get out of the car since Katie’s has a drive-thru! A full-blown diva moment ensued. You know, because I wanted to report on them for the fans…
I won’t lie. I’d done my research on this place months prior, mainly because I wanted to make an educated decision when faced with the plethora of icy, creamy options available. Open since 2002, Katie’s Frozen Custard is a family-owned business where the gourmet custard is made fresh every hour. Of course, the reviews of Katie’s Custard just got me even more worked up about this place: “This has got to be the most delicious dessert I have ever had…” wrote Jake P; “PURE DELICIOUSNESS!” wrote Mika M. I’m pretty sure he was talking about either the caramel, hot fudge and pecan-topped rich vanilla custard or the “strawbana.”
Based on the Internet photos below, you can see why my dreams of tasty frozen custard in Austin (next time!) remain vivid. I apologize in advance for the pangs of hunger they’re about to cause.
“Texas Turtle” (Bottom, left)
This is now my screensaver shot: smooth, creamy vanilla custard dessert doused with just the right amount of hot fudge, caramel, toasted Texas pecans, and a sprinkle of sea salt.
“Strawbana” (Bottom, right)
Commenters on Yelp won’t shut up about Strawbana. It’s a strawberry layered sundae with fresh bananas coating the rim. There isn’t much more to say, except I’m jealous for those lucky enough to have had this touch their lips.
“Old Fashioned Banana Split” (Top, right)
I’ve never had a banana split. What? Crazy, I know! That’s why I will hold out on having one until I am fortunate enough to shove Katie’s Custard’s old-fashioned version into my face hole. It’s three scoops of ice cream nestled between marshmallows, topped with strawberries, peanuts, and two cherries on top. What can compete with that? Nothing and no one.
I’m pretty sure we’ve all decided by this point that we need Katie’s in our lives. If you’re being the healthy type (boo!), or feeling a little too voluptuous like Hans, they do have some low-calorie options, so you won’t FULLY miss out on the experience, or at least you can keep telling yourself that.
If you’re lucky enough to live within driving distance of Katie’s and still haven’t gone, I don’t even know what you’re doing wasting time reading this blog. Maybe you have milk-induced tummy troubles? Missing out on all this delicious frozen cream stuff, it’s a tough life. For those of you with the will and way, however, do each and every one of your taste buds a favor and head to Katie’s Custard.
