Top Five Summer Libations to Beat the Heat

| Thursday, 9 July 2015 21:37

Show me an open bar and I’ll usually take dark liquor or red wine. But in middle of summer and I’m sweating like swine, I’m on the hunt for something that’ll cool me down. Here are some favorites in no particular order.

1. Skinny Blueberry Margarita

Whose margarita intake doesn’t increase in the summer months? This recipe adds a kiss of blueberries, and it won’t torpedo your beach bod like sugar-packed margarita mixes.

2. Grapefruit, Rosemary & Gin Liplicker

We weren’t sure what to call this, but this fizzy, citrusy drink makes our mouth water. Plus just saying “liplicker” gets us a little randy.

3. The Rosy Peach

Nothing says summer like peaches, raspberries, and hooch. This fruity cocktail is good enough to drink year-round, but summer’s perfect for using fresh ingredients — making this baby even better.

4. The Tramp

The secret to the Tramp is sloe gin, which is made by soaking a summer stonefruit (similar to a peach or plum) in delicious, delicious booze. This is the perfect tipple to fuel your summer fling.

5. Cherry Mint Hard Lemonade

This is Nadia’s favorite on the list. And how could it not be? Take the zing of citrus, the dark sweetness of fresh summer cherries, and the refreshing hint of mint — then add booze. You can’t go wrong.

Some of you will turn up your noses at the idea of adding tomato juice (much less Clamato) to a cheap Mexican lager. But don’t knock it ’til you try it. On a hot summer evening, this our go-to drink at our favorite Los Angeles dive bar. Extra spicy, please!
