We like our drinks with a little history to ’em, and this one dates back to the 1940s in Cairo, Egypt. But even if you don’t give two poops about history, it’s hard to argue with a name like “Suffering Bastard.”
Allegedly dreamt up to help smooth a next-morning hangover, the Suffering Bastard is heavy on booze. There is, however, some disagreement about exactly which spirits to use — some call for rum, others brandy; most settle on bourbon with a shot of gin. Along with the rotgut, the ol’ Bastard incorporates some zingy, herbaceous notes that makes it feel almost healthy (so by all means, have another).
Maybe the best thing about this boozy, refreshing drink is that it’s simple as piss to make — even if you’ve had a few already.
Oh, it’s also good for scurvy.

1-3 dashes Angostura bitters
4 oz. chilled ginger ale
Directions: Mix everything but the ginger ale in an ice-filled Old Fashioned glass and stir. Top with ginger ale and, optionally, garnish with an orange slice or sprig of mint.
