One part dark and brooding, one part pious and sweater-wearing. Such is the genius of the Phoenix, Ariz., outfit Okilly Dokilly, a group that calls itself “the world’s only Nedal band.” Simpsons fans, go grab Otto and get ready to rawk.
Mustachioed and clad in ironed slacks, green pullovers, pink shirts, and glasses, the crew describes its sound as “Not as fast as Bartcore, and a little cleaner than Krusty Punk. Not as heavy as Homer Jent. Nedal is a happy medium in the Simpscene.”
Whoa whoa whoa, did you catch all those masterful puns? We might be in love.
So how’d a badass metal band come to be named after possibly the most uptight, priggish character on the Simpsons? Blame it on the local Kwik-E-Mart:
“Myself and our drummer were in line at a grocery store, entertaining ourselves by coming up with really cutesy names for really hardcore, brutal bands,” the band’s frontman, Head Ned says. Other members are dubbed Red Ned, Thread Ned, Stead Ned, and Bled Ned.
If that weren’t enough, all the band’s songs so far have been pulled directly from Flanders quotes, and many incorporate Flanders lore. “All That is Left,” for example, is a tribute to Flanders’ left-handedness. “It’s our homage to the Leftorium,” Head Ned says, “and the bridge is entirely left-handed puns.”
Another track, “Nothing at All,” is based off this soul-scarring episode:
The lack of lady parts means it’s unlikely Okilly Dokilly will get an invite to the next Riot Grill, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t smitten. Maybe all those Neds need a Maude… (Oh wait, she’s dead.)
