Is Lady Gaga Fashion a Hit or Miss?

Welcome to this month’s edition of “Hit + Miss” where the Bitchin’ Lifestyle crew weighs in on the cultural highs and lows we hear about every day. We set the record straight on all that is Pop Culture, allowing you the benefit of always knowing who and what to make fun of. For the first time ever at Bitchin’ Lifestyle we have one candidate for both a hit and a miss.

I’ve been on the fence about whether I like Lady Gaga or not. While her songs are catchy and her music videos are mildly entertaining, for the longest time I just didn’t know what to make of her. Being from Canada, I had been exposed to the pop starlet prior to her US invasion. We got to know a different side of Lady Gaga. While she did sport a lightning bolt under right eye for the longest time, she was still normal enough for a wide audience to appreciate her vocals and talent.

And Lady Gaga has talent. Her last concert blew people away. She danced, she engaged the fans and yes, she sang live. She would have wowed us even if she hadn’t played the piano with her feet, wore eccentric costumes, and smoked on stage. In all honesty, if I hadn’t been introduced to Lady Gaga prior to her lace-mask-wearing phase, I am not entirely convinced that I would be on board with all the over-the-top gimmicks, or at least be able to see past them.

In recent months we have on occasion tweeted about Lady Gaga. Whether it was concerning a performance, an outfit or an outrageous comment, their verdict is in – people love her. She could be wearing a gorilla suit with a banana stuck to the crotch and people would still call it ‘art’.

In trying to remain unbiased, I must give my honest opinion. Sometimes, Gaga is gorgeous and sometimes... she’s just effin’ weird.

Remember when the biggest fashion faux-pas Lady Gaga was guilty of was not wearing pants? You know, when she was bringing back shoulder pads and Jane Fonda work-out wear. Gaga was new on the American music scene trying to make a statement, trying to be different. She looked fierce. With each new release Gaga changed her look, dramatically one–upping the last, and by the time Paparazzi came out in the States, Gaga’s fashion had gone a little coo coo.

At some point, she was quoted as saying that she was ‘in love with her music’, when TMZ stalked her through an airport. Some argue that her vanity finally got to her head, while others argue that she was just a really intelligent woman who found a way to keep us hooked. Regardless of which side you’re on, soon after we were introduced to a different Gaga, one that wore flamboyant hairpieces, Yeti-inspired outfits, and oddly shaped shoes. At every event gossip magazines and entertainment shows were dying to see what she would wear next. And then there was this:

I know I am going against the popular vote and a hoard of 'little monsters' will unite to tell me how stupid I am, but I have to draw the fashion line somewhere, folks. While art does come in many forms we’ve seen this look before – at the Grammy’s, the MTV Awards, the American Music awards, and now at the British Music Awards. This just seems like an “ode to Gaga-Fashion” - an incredibly horrible combination of Gaga-Gear in one single outfit. Flamboyant Hair? Check. Lace Mask? Check. Incredibly ugly dress? Check. You see, this isn’t new, rather, Gaga is running out of crazy outfits to wow her public with. At some point, she’ll have to resort to wearing jeans and a plain old “Talk To The Hand” t-shirt to freak people out.

I can’t wait.
